The Foodsaver V 1085 is a wonderful machine for packaging foods. This machine gets the most use when you buy fresh meat and trim and grind it yourself and then portion it into different size packages for freezing. This great machine sucks all of the air out of the package, creating a nice vacuum seal which allows much longer storage than conventional freezer wraps. It is much slimmer than the newer units available in the market with the stored rolls and fits nicely on most of the counters. The rolls of bags come in different widths are readily available online or in many stores. There are also plastic containers that are available with vacuum sealable lids that allow you to store foods in hard containers instead of bags. These are great for crushable items such as fresh fruits and vegetables and soft foods such as cakes and breads.
The Foodsaver V 1085 also has a vacuum port on the top of the machine and comes equipped with short plastic hose and rubber stoppers which are used to remove air from open bottles. Your open wines last much longer when the air has been removed from the bottle. The machine is very easy to use. You have to roll out and cut a strip of bagging material and cut. Then slip one end over the heat sealing pad and close the cover and press down for a while. The machine continues to run as it heat seals the end of the bag. Then place your food into the bag, allowing for enough room at the end to go across the heat pad and into the drip tray and close the lid. Then press down again on the lid and hold for a while and release. The machine will continue to run as it extracts the air from the bag and then shuts off automatically. Open the lid and remove the vacuum sealed bag. Mark accordingly, as the bags come with writable strips along the sides.
It is advisable to place the end of the sealable bag into the drip tray for a stronger suction and better sealing. Do not try to seal breads or cakes in the bags. They will crush from the strong vacuum. Always make sure that you cut the bags long enough to allow for the end to be placed into the drip tray and there is enough space to cover the sealing pad before closing the lid. You can cut off any excess length after sealing. These machines cost you about $125 or so. You can always shop around for the best price. You can also use this machine to reseal snack bags such as potato chips. If you want to vacuum seal the potato chips, then you can use the canisters for the purpose. Moreover the machine does not make much noise and it is an altogether different experience using this machine in the kitchen but most of the users term it in a must have category.
